Summary

I think this article is important because it demonstrates the US Carmakers still have what it takes to compete worldwide.  Ford has a fine machine with it's new Fusion/Milan Hybrid.  GM will be selling the Volt in a year or so.  Though each company has it's own spin on Hybrids, I believe more buying options are better to find out which technology will work best in real world use.

Analysis

I have been a firm believer in buying American.  Some domestic cars are not built or designed well, but that is the case with imports as well.  There are many fine domestic cars that exceed the performance, reliabilty and design over imports.  When shopping for a car Americans should do a comparison and try to find an American car to suit your needs.  This will keep our dollars here in the country and reduce our deficit.
GM & Ford especially have models that compete head to head with imports.  The consumer perseption on quality needs to be addressed.  Buick for example has consistantly had many of their models in the top of JD Powers quality test.  Toyota is a good company, but a Ford Fusion is a better buy than a Camry for several reasons.  It is as good in quality and buying one will save your neighbors job, not send the money back to Japan.  Even though many models are built here, Toyota doesn't have the same burdon as GM/Ford with regards to Unions.  If you want to keep a Union worker employed you better start thinking American.
