Excessive antibiotic use leads to resistance
Analysis of:
Proof Nailed Down that Antibiotics Use Leads to Resistance | www.medpagetoday.com
This analysis is solely the work of the author. It has not been edited or endorsed by GLG.
Implications: This article has validity in dermatology due to the increased resistance seen in acne. This may have clinical significance in that we may be seeing resistance to therapy in acne patients after prolonged use.
Collagenex corp. is developing non antibiotic medications for acne and rosacea that are based on antibiotics, and have anti-inflamatory activity. These include Oracea and Incyclinide.
If the studies on Incyclinide are positive, then this would be a very successful drug for acne.
Analysis: Most physicians are aware of the problem. This will not halt the use of antibiotics. It will make them more judicious in their selection and avoidance of long term use if possible.
