Summary
These data will help justify earlier treatment of patients infected with HIV, before damage to the immune system occurs.
Analysis
The push to delay treatment was dictated in large part by the side effects of long term antiretroviral therapy. This had to be balanced with any positive effects of preserving immune function. New agents are safer, better tolerated, and there is a lower pill burden than previously was possible.
