Implications: The importance of this ruling lies not so much in its possible implications for the future of Iberdrola, but what it means for the EU Energy Market? Its a clear message to France, Germany and Italy and their monopolized energy markets and its one step closer to Brussels objective of unbundling energy ownership, generation and distribution. A reorganization, which will also likely involve Europe's main energy suppliers such as Russia and Algeria.

Analysis: E.On's move at the end of February falls in line with this new shift in policy and positions E.On favourably as a key player in the upcoming reorganization of the EU energy market. EDF, ENEL and Iberdrola will be next to make moves and form part of negotiation between Europe's leading energy markets France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Brussels.

Perhaps Spain is not looking to create national champions but to participate actively in the creation of European champions or at least to participate in a unbundled energy generation and distribution market.

Iberdrola and its worldwide presence and renewables leadership could be the key to forcing EDF and E.ON to reciprocally opening their markets to Spanish and international capital and competition.
