Summary
1. Approximately 2 years ago Cree purchased Cotco a China based LED manufacturer which allowed Cree to expand it's product offering. With the release of the X Lamp R MX-6 device in the PLCC package, Cree now has a product that should allow it to successfully compete against Nichia and Osram who have been some of the market leader for PLCC lighting LEDs.
Analysis
1. This device is primarily used in indoor lighting applications by lighting manufacturers such as Sloan, Ledtronics, etc. that create indoor lighting solutions such as architectural step lighting, indoor signs, etc.
2. Although this is a nice addition to their product line it will only be a short time before their entrenched competitors upgrade the performance of their own PLCC LED's.
3. These small package PLCC devices are not exactly in the mainstream of power white lighting but are certainly a positive addition to Cree's line of XR and XP leds.
