Summary

The key to success of marketing Rotarix or similar Rotavirus vaccines is in the design of clinical trials and evaluation of criteria and results of past use of these vaccines in developing countries that have a high incidence of rotavirus diarrhea in infants.  Rotavirus vaccine use is a  prototype for preventive medicine since the key is to provide immunity to an immunologically naive population.

Analysis

Rotavirus vaccines have been used in veterinary medicine for over 30 years and after many years of the vaccine's use with questionable success the pharma companies developed a vaccine give to the mother and another vaccine to the neonate when the individual was more able to respond to antigenic stimulus.  The effectiveness of this vaccine regimen was much more successful in preventing diarrhea.
Since rotavirus infection is much more prevalent and harmful in neonatal nurseries, daycare facilities, etc. where children are commingling, the lesson's already studied in similar environments might suggest better methods or protocols for use of Rotarix.
