Analysis
Chinese auto makers are in the midst of major competitive battles in their home country. There will be a major consolidation in their market over the next 10 years. At the same time, Chinese auto companies have not demonstrated a good understanding of other auto markets, especially the major ones such as Europe and North America. It is questionable that they can convince high level government officials and executives that they can make Opel successful.
German government bodies and unions have a strong influence, even some control, over their auto companies. It is hard to imagine that they would agree to a Chinese company taking control of Opel.
GM has said that it intends to retain some ownership and cooperation with the new Opel. Despite their success in China with their partners in that country it seems that it would be a major hurdle to overcome to project a successful venture with a Chinese company in Europe.
