Summary
Latest data from Brazil's development, industry and trade ministry (MDIC) confirm that China has replaced the US as Brazil's top export destination. Will this latest international trade trend help or hurt the global logistics market?
Analysis
Per the Brazilian MDIC exports to China exceeded exports to the US by some US $467M in March 2009. China’s export gap grew in April to US $890M. Year over year this growth represents nearly a 68% variance.
In the near term, numerous North American Supply Chain Operators will be impacted; ocean carriers, air cargo carriers, the South Florida import and export markets, and the federal government compliance organizations. Two months & $1.3 billion is not a big deal in the global marketplace but one should rethink strategy if the Brazilian export trend continues and spread to other Latin American countries.
