Analysis

Since 1996 and the FDA approval of the eximer laser for vision correction the thrust
for spectacle-free vision has been a dominet theme in eye care.  This has carried over to the management of cataracts and presbyopia.  Hyperopes with presbyopia and clear crystalline lenses are subjects for lens removal and multifocal or
accommodative IOL replacement.  The indications for cataract removal has been
dramatically enlarged.  This forsees a significant increase in the use of premium
IOLs (multifocal, accomodative and toric)  As these IOLs are used for refractive correction Medicare and insurance plans consider them cosmetic and deny payment.
This allows the ophthalmologist to charge a private fee for the refractive part of the procedure.  The multifocal IOL, ReStor+3 from Alcon allows unaided far and near vision post lens extraction.  As its range is prefered over its competitor, ReZoom
its market share should reflect its function.  The Crystalens of B&L is the only FDA
approved IOL that accomodates and is monofocal.  The disadvantages of  multifocal
IOLs are glare, decreased contrast sensitivity and night vision difficulty.
