Summary

This article makes fun of the fact that some people have queried Bill Gates' personal website and noticed that it looked like it was running on a Linux server.  Others noted that it was a Windows server.  The truth lies with Akamai, a very popular web-acceleration service.

Analysis

The deal is that Bill uses Akamai to mirror his sites in the event of heavy traffic or some sort of web attack.  I like Akamai, their service offering and the fact that everyone uses them.  I do quite a few calls on Content Delivery Networks (CDN) and Akamai frequently rises to the top.

In 2003 the same thing happened with Microsoft's servers, and they have changed the way they use their servers to make them all return a Windows signature.  The key for me is that in 2003 they were using Akamai.  Akamai is used all over the internet, and I think that they are an important company to keep in mind.
