Summary
BD has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire privately held Handy Lab, Inc. This development will provide BD with the automated, molecular diagnostic platform to compete in the many, high growth molecular diagnostics market segments.
Analysis
BD announced today a definitive agreement to acquire privately held Handy Lab, Inc, of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but the company said that this will be discussed during BD's 4th quarter conference call scheduled for November 4.
Earlier in the year BD announced that it would partner with Handy Lab to market some of its infectious disease tests on Handy lab's Jaguar automated molecular diagnostics platform. This partnership quickly evolved into BD's intended acquisition of Handy Lab. The proposed acquisition offers BD several advantages over its current infectious disease product offerings and could enable it to compete against other companies in the Hospital Acquired Infection (HAI) space such as Cepheid.
Handy Lab is also involved in a lawsuit with Caliper. The company is seeking court declaration that technology used in its Raider and Jaguar systems do not infringe Caliper Life Sciences patents.
