Summary
Apple's ability to launch iPhone into the Chinese market is seriously in doubt given their technical problems with OS 3.1 in addition to other issues mentioned in the WSJ article -see my analysis of 20th Sept. 2009 titled "Google VOIP apps via Mobile -a trilogy".
It will be clearly disastrous to prematurely launch into such a big and a novel market where Apple wants to establish a good reputation and an enviable market position by rushing into a premature launch of an unreliable product.
Analysis
1. Apple cannot put its iPhone into a "COMA Mode" for the US and W.Europe ( responsible for 75% of global product sales for iPhone ) as mentioned in the orĂ¯ginal article and my related analysis suggest; at the same time pretend that it can launch into the Chinese market prematurely.
Problems with OS 3.1 need to be resolved first prior to re launch into US/W.European markets and prior to launch into CHINA etc.
2. Furthermore, Apple needs to get past hurdles re negotiations with China Unicom and not risk a disastrous premature launch in order to preempt launch of other competitor's products such as China Mobile Ltd. 's launch of a similar product based on Google Inc. 's Android OS.
3. Wisdom would dictate a reliable, reworked, solid product launch into CHINA; even if it a few months later than expedient!!
But who takes wise counsel these days ... except when it is too late !!
