Summary

The difference between a Mac and a Dell is strictly the OS.  Why would Apple want to sell the same hardware for lower margins?

Analysis

If Apple made the strategic decision to compete in the PC market they could do it with their current hardware and distribution and for much less money than buying Dell.  It would be a minor change to have a Mac boot up a Microsoft OS directly.

Dell offers nothing to Apple.  Buying Dell could diminish the Apple brand and would certainly be dilutionary.  Absolutely no possible upside from such a purchase.  Adds no technology, no distribution and a tainted name brand.  Doesn't change the competitive environment.
