Alogliptin on the diabetes horizon.

Implications: Diabetes is on the rise globallyExisting oral therapeutics have significant drawbacks but are cheap (generic) and some have been in use for many years.

Analysis:
This new agent (alogliptin) represents a powerful addition to the oral anti-hyperglycemic class and has the benefit of potential beta cell preservation, lack of weight gain, and absence of hypoglycemia that are common to competing oral agents.  The interesting angle to consider is whether alogliptin will be competitive with existing DPP4 inhibitors that have a significant market lead, and whether the combination with pioglitazone is prudent.
