Summary

Companies such as Cisco and Sonus Networks have taken away many sales for equipment that would have gone to A-L in the past.

Analysis

Mergers of like technology companies are difficult at best.  When Compaq bought DEC Michael Dell was reported to have done a dance in his office since he was sure (and history proved him correct) that it would be detrimental to Compaq.  Likewise I am sure the CEOs of Cisco and Sonus Networks, among others, felt the same way about the Alcatel Lucent merger.

While Pat Russo has been struggling to tame this international beast with diverse cultures and work habits both Sonus and Cisco have been stealing market share and design wins from A-L.  In particular Sonus (http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=109&STORY=/www/story/11-08-2007/0004701504&EDATE=)
has emerged as a leader in the VoIP field and this was at the expense of A-L.
