Summary

1.  Ericsson is a big player in DWDM transport, especially in Europe. 2.  It provides service routers as well that may require higher-end optical electronics.   3.  A rundown on some of the other 40G/100G suppliers can be found below.

Analysis

While the source article talks about the potential “path length” at 100G, there is no mentioning of the actual distance for the field trial involving Ericsson’s equipment.  One may assume it was rather short.  And certainly lab experiments that are mentioned in the piece are not necessarily a good indication of what will actually happen in the field.

In terms of other vendors with 40G/100G:

• Alcatel-Lucent appears to be a fairly solid competitor at 40G as it continues to push its LamdaXtreme to customers.

• Fujitsu is a major force in the 40G modulator/demodulator space.

• Juniper claims it is going to have 100G some time in the future.

• Opnext is working to retain the business at 100G that is has at 40G with Ciena, Cisco Systems, and Nokia Siemens.

• 40G module suppliers, Finisar and Mintera, are both big competitors in the VSR space and will probably be big players on the line side as well for the DPSK, potentially DQPSK, 40G/100G market.
