Q: What are the Gerson Lehrman Group CouncilsSM?
A: The Gerson Lehrman Group Councils are industry-focused networks of executives, physicians, scientists, engineers, attorneys, market researchers and other professionals from around the world. Members of the GLG Councils are compensated for consulting with global business and investment leaders on topics within their area of expertise. Council MembersSM provide their industry-specific knowledge through telephone consultations, online surveys and in-person meetings, among other consulting methods.
Q: Who manages the Gerson Lehrman Group Councils?
A: Gerson Lehrman Group (GLG) manages the world’s leading network of experts, the GLG Councils. Our services and web-based software help the world’s leading financial services firms, professional service firms, corporations, and nonprofits find, engage, and manage experts. GLG carefully recruits experts and assembles them into global networks, organized into and known as the GLG Councils.
GLG has the world’s largest expert recruiting team and most scalable expert contracting systems to support this constantly growing expert network.
Q: Who are the business and investment leaders Council Members consult with?
A: Council Members consult with business and investment leaders from the world’s leading financial services firms, professional service firms, corporations, and nonprofits who want to be better informed on various industry topics. Discussions with Council Members provide them with continuing education on their research interest, allowing them to make more intelligent decisions.
Q: What do Council Members do?
A: Council Members provide insight and education to decision-makers through different types of interactions with our Clients, ranging from quick inquiries to comprehensive due diligence efforts. Many of these interactions are telephone consultations. Other interactions include educational events (such as formal seminars, collaborative discussions, site tours and private in-office meetings); written products, (including surveys, GLG NewsSM, single-author reports, collaborative multi-author reports, and market studies) and various forms of in-depth and ongoing consulting, such as serving as an expert witness in a litigation.
Q: How am I paid?
A: When you apply, you are asked to enter what you feel is a fair hourly rate for your time. Council Members should consider their position, experience, scarcity of others with similar knowledge, etc. If you do not know what rate to choose, a Council Manager can help guide you. Also, Gerson Lehrman Group has semi-annual review periods if you’d like to request an honorarium change once your initial rate is set. After completing a project, Members log in to councils.glgroup.com to submit invoices. Council Members can elect to be paid either by check or by electronic payment in a number of currencies. Payment is prompt – usually within seven to ten business days, once verified. Payments for surveys and in-person meetings are sent automatically once those projects are completed and verified.
Q: Is there a membership fee?
A: No. Joining the Gerson Lehrman Group Councils is free.
Q: What topics will I be expected to discuss during a project?
A: Gerson Lehrman Group clients are typically interested in either broad discussions about a general industry or more detailed information about a particular product, service or trend. You may not discuss confidential information with our clients, and such disclosures can seriously harm you and our clients. For example, any disclosure of confidential information may legally require the client to abandon a previously planned-upon investment.
Q: How do I know whether I am permitted to discuss a particular topic?
A: If you are in doubt, do not discuss the topic. You may be subject to one or more confidentiality agreements that prevent you from discussing certain topics. Also, certain kinds of information are likely confidential in nature and for that reason must not be discussed with our clients, including but not limited to information about earnings projections and other forecasts, corporate strategies, unpublished clinical trial data, regulatory approval for a drug, new product developments and inventions, awards of large contracts, significant litigation, proposed mergers or acquisitions or any other significant but undisclosed negative or positive news relevant to a particular industry or company.
Q: What do I do if a confidential topic comes up during a project?
A: Don’t discuss that topic. If ever you feel that you cannot continue a discussion without revealing confidential information or otherwise violating an obligation to an employer or third party, you must terminate that discussion and notify GLG immediately. In such situations, Gerson Lehrman Group will pay you for the time you set aside for that interaction.
Q: How do I become a Council Member?
A: To become a Council Member you must complete the online application, complete a short online tutorial and sign the online GLG Terms and Conditions of Council Membership. Council Members are required to annually re-sign the Terms and Conditions and complete the tutorial to remain eligible to participate in projects. Applicants to the GLG Councils who have signed a separate confidentiality agreement are permitted to view open projects and certain other information but are not yet eligible to participate in projects.
Q: What are the GLG Terms and Conditions of Council Membership?
A: The Terms and Conditions is a binding contract between GLG and its Council Members. It is designed to protect Council Members, GLG clients and GLG. Among other things, it requires Council Members to honor their obligations to employers and other third parties, and it requires Council Members to follow GLG’s additional rules. For example, GLG prohibits Council Members from consulting about their own companies. GLG also places limitations on the type and amount of consulting that Council Members may do through GLG unless the Council Member is enrolled in GLG’s Member Programs. The Terms and Conditions also requires Council Members to keep any information they learn about clients and about their projects strictly confidential.
Q: Who is responsible for determining my eligibility to join the GLG Councils and to participate in projects?
A: You are. GLG does not make that determination for you. Prior to joining the GLG Councils you should review employment agreements, employee manuals, codes of conduct, consulting agreements and other similar policies and agreements (in each case as applicable) and check with employers or other third parties as necessary. Once you have joined the GLG Councils, it is your responsibility to decline projects that are inappropriate for you and to decline to discuss topics that present a conflict for you.
Q: Do some companies have policies about their employees doing outside consulting?
A: Yes. Some companies have policies concerning participation in outside consulting activities by their employees, and you should confirm with your employer whether you are subject to a policy. You must comply with any such restrictions. Additionally, while GLG relies on its Council Members to assess and honor their own obligations, GLG also regularly reaches out to companies to ask about their policies. If GLG learns that a company prohibits outside consulting, GLG will automatically exclude current employees of that company from participating in projects through the GLG Councils.
Q: Does GLG keep my information confidential?
A: You should not join the GLG Councils if you would not want your participation to be known to your employer or to other third parties to whom you owe obligations. In the interest of transparency, GLG reserves the right to share information about you with your current employer and to anyone else whose consent may be relevant to your participation in the GLG Councils or in a particular Project. GLG also reserves the right to include information about you on its websites and other marketing materials, subject to your right to opt-out. If you wish to participate in GLG News or in GLG Events, however, any such opt-out would be ineffective. To learn more about your information rights, please see our privacy policy.
Q: Will GLG sell my personal information?
A: No. GLG will not sell or license your information to a third party for marketing purposes.
Q: Can I tell people about the projects I have been invited to or participated in?
A: No. Council Members are required to keep all projects confidential, including the existence of the project, the identity of the client and the subject matter discussed.
Q: I'm busy. How am I supposed to find the time for this?
A: Gerson Lehrman Group respects the busy schedules of its Council Members. Council Members may accept or decline an invitation to consult for any reason. There is never an obligation to engage with any client and no minimum time commitment is required.
Q: How often will I be invited to projects?
A: That depends in large part upon the requests made by our clients. Gerson Lehrman Group makes no guarantees with respect to the number of projects that you will be invited to or participate in.
Q: What are GLG Member Programs?
A: Gerson Lehrman Group created GLG Member Programs to enable qualifying Council Members to engage in ongoing or in-depth projects with our clients. Only Council Members in GLG Member Programs are permitted to participate in more than three telephone consultations a year with a client or to prepare any written reports. Additionally, participation in project types other than consultations and surveys, including GLG News and GLG Events, are exclusive to Council Members in GLG Member Programs. To meet program requirements, most employed Council Members must obtain written consent of their employers.
Q: Can I work with other organizations if I become a Council Member?
A: Yes. Council Members are permitted to join other associations or organizations. Gerson Lehrman Group enters into exclusive arrangements with some of its top Council Members, and if you are interested in such an arrangement, you should contact GLG.
Q: If I consult with a client through GLG, can I negotiate directly with that client for additional work?
A: No. If GLG introduces you to one of our clients, you agree not to consult with that client for at least one year. Council Members are eligible, however, to participate through GLG in multiple projects with any of our clients.
Q: If I had an existing relationship with a client prior to joining the GLG Councils, can I continue to work with them outside of the Gerson Lehrman Group Councils?
A: Yes. We ask only that any relationships established between you and a client by Gerson Lehrman Group continue through the Gerson Lehrman Group Councils.
Q: If I work on a project for one person at a large company, does that mean I cannot work with anyone else at that company outside of Gerson Lehrman Group?
A: No. We understand that some GLG clients may contact Council Members independently of GLG. However, we ask that for any relationships that are established, directly or indirectly, between you and these firms by an introduction through GLG, that you continue to work with these firms through GLG.
Q: What if I am not currently living in the US?
A: If you live outside the United States you can still be a Council Member. Council Members and clients are located throughout the world. Projects occur across the globe and can be scheduled at convenient times for Council Members and clients.
Q: What if I am not fluent in English?
A: Individuals can still join the GLG Councils if they are not fluent in English.
Q: Why do Council Members participate?
A: Studies of GLG Council Members indicate that they participate for several reasons – two of which stand out. First, Member Programs provides them professional development opportunities and unique insights into their businesses. Participating Council Members enjoy the exchange of ideas with our clients and their fellow Council Members, and those in Member Programs are eligible to participate in industry-specific white papers. Second, Council Members are offered an honorarium, which can either take the form of a payment to themselves or their employers. Some Council Members decline to receive an honorarium.
Q: How will you determine my accept %?
A: We base this on your records. We do need to ensure that participating Council Members continue to work with us at a level similar to past participation.
To be clear, only projects you are able to, and permitted to participate in will count toward this percentage. If you have a conflict or are otherwise uncomfortable with the subject matter for a project we invite you to, you should always decline.
Q: How will you determine if I have a conflict?
A: Council Members are in the best position to know when participation in projects is appropriate and when to decline is warranted. We trust our Council Members to act in good faith when accepting and declining projects.
Q: When you mention that you will use my name, participation as a Leader and biographical information in marketing materials and Web sites, can you be more specific?
A: As part of our plan to market our services to our clients and prospective clients, we have placed the names and biographical information of many of our GLG Leaders on our glgroup.com Web site. Visit www.glgroup.com and click on any one of the eight practice area pages (Healthcare, Real Estate, Technology, Media & Telecommunications, etc.) to see examples of pages highlighting current GLG Leaders. As a way to help maximize your new revenue opportunities from www.glgroup.com, your past and future GLG NewsSM posts are also available on our public Web site, increasing your chances of being found online. Other examples of marketing include promotional materials or marketing materials that highlight the Council Member network, specifically the GLG Leaders program.
Q: Can I opt-out of the marketing clause and still be a GLG Leader?
A: We will work with our Member Programs participants to make the experience as rewarding as possible. However, if you decide to opt out of the marketing clause, doing so may have an adverse effect on the amount of consulting work to which you may be invited because we will not have the ability to market you and your expertise to clients (and prospective clients).
Q: What are the downsides if I don’t enroll in Member Programs?
A: Only Council Members participating in GLG Council Member programs will be eligible to participate in the full suite of GLG consulting opportunities and be able to participate in ongoing and in-depth projects with clients. Also, you will not have the status, or flag on your profile, of a GLG Leader, GLG Scholar, or GLG Educator which our clients often look for.
Q: Can I break the contract if I don’t like the way it works out? If I do enroll in a GLG Council Member programs, will I have the choice to dis-enroll?
A: The Leaders Agreement is a year long contract and we expect all parties to honor that commitment. However, we do realize that situations sometimes do change. For example, if your permission to consult changes, we may need to revisit the commitment of the Leaders Agreement. Additionally, the Leaders Agreement provides that either party may terminate the agreement with 90-days notice. If you terminate for a reason other than by reason of a breach by GLG or your loss of consent, the exclusivity provision will survive for 90-days.
After the year-mark, we’ll each evaluate the relationship to see if it makes sense for both parties to continue.
Q: Why am I eligible to participate?
A: You have a CouncilRank in the top 5% or 20% of worldwide Council Members . CouncilRank is our proprietary internal expert ranking system. GLG CouncilRank assigns ratings to Council Members based on qualitative and quantitative measures such as the quality of Council Member and client interactions, the demand those interactions create and other factors. To enroll in Council Member Programs, most employed Council Members must provide GLG with written consent from their employers.
Q: How will you determine my rank?
A: Through GLG CouncilRank, our proprietary rating system, ratings are given to those consulting activities through our network that provide value to clients and the GLG business as whole. CouncilRank inputs are based on qualitative and quantitative measures such as the quality of Council Member and client interactions, the demand those interactions create, and other factors. CouncilRank is an unbiased and fully automated system that is driven exclusively by Council Members’ interactions with GLG clients. Accepting projects on topics you are not qualified for or where you cannot be helpful to clients given potential conflicts and the bounds of any obligations and agreements you may have to third parties or that would cause you to otherwise conflict with the Terms and Conditions of Council Membership (which you must adhere to) will negatively impact your CouncilRank.
Q: What if the rank is influenced by factors I can’t control?
A: GLG CouncilRank is an unbiased system driven by Council Member activity. CouncilRank inputs are based on qualitative and quantitative measures such as the quality of Council Member and client interactions, the demand those interactions create, and others.
Council Members can proactively improve their CouncilRank:
Q: Will my rank be negatively impacted if I decline Consultations with which I have a conflict?
A: No. You have agreed to decline ALL consulting opportunities in which you feel there is ANY conflict of interest or where you otherwise might not be comfortable. All our Council Member/client interactions are governed by our Terms and Conditions of Council Membership which make this clear.
Q: Are international Council Members eligible?
A: Of course. Our international Council Members are equally as important as our domestic Council Members - they receive the same program benefits. We are excited to have a global network of GLG Leaders, GLG Scholars, and GLG Educators.
Q: Why would I limit myself from consulting with other companies?
A: GLG has the largest client base of any firm of its kind. With increased status and recognition due to our marketing of GLG Leaders on the www.glgroup.com Web site, networking events and eligibility to participate in our full suite of consulting products, we anticipate you will have more opportunities to interact with our clients, which could lead to additional financial rewards. Also, our industry-leading compliance platform allows you to:
Q: Isn’t exclusivity worth a premium?
A: Absolutely. That is why we are investing in you by promoting you as a GLG Leader to our clients, inviting you to networking events, providing you access to industry-specific information and offering you eligibility to participate in our full suite of consulting products — these are benefits only available to GLG Leaders.
Q: I understand that GLG Leaders need to be exclusive because it is an extension of the GLG brand. I know my colleagues work with some of your competitors. Doesn't this erode your brand if I'm part of your brand and my colleague is part of another? Can I participate even if one of my colleagues is exclusive with someone else?
A: Yes. You can still participate. We are investing in and promoting you as a knowledge leader. We understand that some of your colleagues may work with other firms, but that DOES NOT AFFECT your work with GLG. If you or your firm is interested, we do have a program for firms (GLG Partners Program) and can speak to you or the appropriate member of your firm regarding this enterprise level program.
Q: How will you know if I am working with your competitors?
A: As always, we expect our Council Members to act in good faith when participating in our platform and hope that GLG Leaders will act accordingly regarding the commitments of the program. However, because of the relatively small size of the community, it is likely that if someone was in breach of the exclusivity provision we would find out.
Q: What are some other companies that do this and how are you different from them?
A: Since we created this market more than 10 years ago, there have been a few companies that have emerged offering similar opportunities. The main differences are:
Q: I already work with some of your competitors. What if their clients contact me directly?
A: Working with clients via other firms would be a violation of the Leaders agreement. You should instruct that client that you are only available to consult through GLG.
We believe that the added benefits of GLG Member Programs, such as promotion to our client base - which is by far the largest and most influential - will outweigh the potential earnings from other companies.
Q: I am not sure my manager will approve. Why should I rock the boat?
A: We are happy to help you explain the value of participation in the GLG Councils, including:
Our platform allows Council Members and their employers to specify topics they can and cannot discuss, and also limit the frequency or interaction of their employees with our clients.
When management understands these benefits and features of our platform, including the fact that Council Members have the opportunity to vet projects in advance and that their consent to your participation is not an endorsement of your participation, GLG or our Member Programs, we expect they will have no issues. To further our common goal of fostering transparency, we believe it’s important to confirm they are comfortable with your participation in this Program. We can send a document to you to provide your manager or work with your manager directly.
Q: What if I offer you exclusivity but cannot provide consent?
A: Both are requirements to participate in our GLG Leaders Program. In order to foster our common goal of transparency, we believe obtaining clear, informed consent to your participation from, where applicable, a person authorized to provide consent on behalf of your employer, is appropriate.
It’s important to all participants that we confirm your employer is comfortable with your participation in this Program before embarking on it.
Q: What if I switch employers during the course of the exclusivity period?
A: If that occurs, update your GLG profile immediately. Depending on your new employer and position, depending on the circumstances regarding your switch, we may need to confirm that your new employer is comfortable with your participation in GLG Council Member programs. We are more than happy to help you approach your employer and will provide you with a consent form for your employer to sign and send back to GLG.
Q: What are the networking opportunities with other GLG Leaders?
A: We offer GLG Leaders the ability to interact with other GLG Leaders within their industry on certain mutually beneficial, appropriate topics. If mutual interest (and ability to participate) exists on such appropriate topics approved by each GLG Leader, GLG will facilitate up to four such peer-to-peer consultations of up to one-hour each. GLG may require each participant to agree to separate terms of participation for such peer-to-peer interactions. In addition, GLG Leaders will be invited to regional GLG Events called Councils Connect
Q: What are the GLG Seminar opportunities with GLG Leaders?
A: As part of our offer to you to be a member of the GLG Leaders program, you and one guest will be given access to all GLG Seminars worldwide subject to availability.
Q: What are the GLG News opportunities with GLG Leaders?
A: As part of our offer to you to be a member of the GLG Leaders program, you will be eligible to participate in GLG News.
Q: What other meaningful benefits are part of this program?
A: The program is designed to offer participating Council Members with the ability to showcase their expertise and to position themselves as true experts in their field, thereby leading to more consulting opportunities. The program offers:

A: Yes. We need the following documents from you in order to create a Company Account. These should be sent to the Member Solutions team through efax at +1 512 853 2140 or email at MSPaymentAccount@glgroup.com.
Q: Why can’t I just raise my hourly rate?
A: That is a separate discussion and not part of the GLG Council Member program arrangement.
Q: Money is not important to me so why should I be exclusive? I participate since I like educating your clients
A: Our clients value your insights. As you may know, we have the largest client base for the types of consulting projects we arrange and offer our Member Program participants the largest variety of consulting opportunities and products thereby offering you the greatest opportunity to interact with the people driving global business innovation. Exclusivity also offers convenience. Since you will only have one company contacting you, you will have the ability to better manage your workflow as you see fit.
