Definition: MVNO

MVNO stands for Mobile Virtual Network Operator. It acts as a wholesale provider of cellular carrier minutes to subscribers. Wireless companies are attracted to MVNOs because it is close to saturation point in terms of getting totally new users of cell phones. There is little or no risk to the wireless network owner with all of the advantages of getting additional subscribers onto its network. While there have been a good number of successful firms using the MVNO business model, in general it is a high-risk proposition for recently established firms.
