Definition: Backhaul

Backhaul refers to the trunking between the mobile switching center of a wireless carrier and the central office of the landline provider. It represents the highest operational cost to a cellular company. Over the years, the use of microwave gear and the leasing of T1 capacity have been the principal ways of providing backhaul. The latter method can be especially expensive because often an incumbent local exchange carrier is the only provider of a particular span. Cable TV companies and other carriers have been striving to make inroads into the backhaul service market. Cellular companies are also looking at lower-cost solutions such as pseudowire and WiMAX. As the industry proceeds to new generations of wireless technology, the amount of capacity necessary for backhaul is substantially increased.
