Definition: High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)

Formerly termed high pressure liquid chromatography, this is the use of a liquid pump that can deliver the mobile phase at high pump pressure through an analytical column for the purposes of separating compounds found in the liquid phase. Reverse-phase HPLC refers to the use of polar mobile phases and separation based on polarity on non-polar stationary phases.
