There are two major forms of herpes simplex virus. Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) usually causes periodic ulcers of the lips (“cold sores”). Herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2) usually causes painful ulcers of the genital areas. The treatment of choice for herpes simplex virus infections is acyclovir, which is often administered as a pro-drug called valaciclovir. Rarely, herpes simplex virus can cause inflammation of the brain (“herpes encephalitis”).
