Definition: Fluoroquinolones

The fluoroquinolones are an antibiotic class that includes ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin and moxifloxacin. Ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin have been widely used for infections with Gram negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Levofloxacin and moxifloxacin have been widely used for community-acquired pneumonia because of their in vitro activity against Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Legionella.
