- Definition: Febrile neutropenia
-
Patients receiving chemotherapy for treatment of cancer, leukemia or related conditions develop low numbers of white blood cells (neutropenia). Since the major function of white blood cells is defense against infection, neutropenic patients have a vastly increased risk of bacterial and fungal infection. When neutropenic patients develop fever, physicians empirically prescribe broad-spectrum antibiotics including those active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
