- Definition: Enterobacteriaceae
-
Some Gram negative bacilli that typically inhabit the gastrointestinal tract are known as the Enterobacteriaceae. These include Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Enterobacter and Salmonella. They are common causes of urinary tract infection, diarrhea and peritonitis. Antibiotic resistance in the Enterobacteriaceae is increasing, largely due to mechanisms such as production of beta-lactamases (such as extended-spectrum beta-lactamases and the KPC beta-lactamase).
