Definition: Durable Medical Equipment (DME)

This is a category of medical equipment that is defined by CMS as DMEPOS (Durable Medical Equipment Prosthetic and Orthotic Supplies) which are for home use and reimbursed under Medicare Part B. Durable medical equipment is equipment which is used in the home and consists primarily of oxygen therapy-related equipment, equipment for the treatment of sleep apnea, hospital beds, wheelchairs, bedside commodes, walkers, canes, and other items.
