Definition:

Community-acquired pneumonia

Pneumonia is an infection of the lung. Pneumonia acquired outside of hospital is referred to as community-acquired pneumonia. Recently a further subdivision of this condition (healthcare associated pneumonia) has been devised because of differences in the organisms likely to cause true community-acquired pneumonia and that acquired in nursing homes and other healthcare facilities.
