- Definition: Aspergillosis
-
Aspergillosis refers to infection with the fungus, Aspergillus. This is an example of a mould infection. The most feared form of aspergillosis is invasive pulmonary aspergillosis, which is a severe lung infection often associated with dissemination to other body sites such as the brain. Aspergillosis can not be treated with the commonly used antifungal, fluconazole. Rather it is treated with amphotericin, voriconazole or echinocandins. The optimal prevention strategies for invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in immunocompromised patients remains uncertain.
