Definition:

Aneurysm

An aneurysm is an abnormal dilation of a blood vessel (usually the aorta but can be any blood vessel) or of the ventricle. Aneurysms of the aorta can occur anywhere along its length and are typically associated with atherosclerosis. A rupture of an aneurysm can be potentially fatal. Aneurysms, if caught early enough, can be repaired by either invasive surgery to repair the aneurysm, or in some cases by placing a graft into the vessel on a metal stent to prevent the aneurysm from rupturing. Treatment of aneurysms if they do not require repair usually consists of medications to control hypertension
