- Definition: Anaerobes
-
Anaerobes are bacteria that grow well in the absence of oxygen. Many anaerobic bacteria have a particular predisposition to living in the gastrointestinal tract. There are only a limited number of antibiotics with activity against anaerobes. These include metronidazole, piperacillin/tazobactam, amoxicillin/clavulanate and carbapenems. Resistance of anaerobic bacteria to these antibiotics occurs. However most clinical microbiology laboratories do not routinely test for susceptibility to anti-anaerobic drugs.
