Definition: Acne

An inflammatory skin condition of the oil glands of the face an trunk. It starts with blocked oil glands called comedones, which then get inflamed and form pimples and deeper nodules and cysts. It is painful and can scar. It is treated with retinoids, topical and oral antibiotics, and isotretinoin. Acne starts in the teenage years and can persist into the 40s.
