Definition: Ablation

Radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFA) is a procedure used to destroy (ablate) electrical tissue in the heart using radiofrequency energy.  The tissue which is ablated is usually involved in some form of an arrhythmia.  Ablation of this tissue usually results in the disappearance of the arrhythmia. An ablation is typically performed in conjunction with an electrophysiology study (EPS) to diagnosis the type of arrhythmia and identify the target of ablation.
