In dry bulk shipping, a Panamax vessels are classified as ships with a cargo-carrying capablility (referred to as the Deadweight tonnage or DWT) between 60,000 and 100,000 metric tonnes. Panamax vessels are named for being sized as the largest dry bulk ships capable of transiting the Panama Canal. A subclass of the Panamax is the Kamsarmax, which are greater than 80,000 DWT. Panamax vessels typically trade in coal and grains, but lately have been utilized to a great extent in the iron ore trade due to high demand.
