Definition: Flatbed Trucking

This is a specialized service that is used for hauling oversized, heavy materials as well as goods requiring special handling, such as windows and glass. It is not considered a growth sector, but margins in flatbed are usually above the industry average. There are small, specialized flatbed operators (mom and pops) but mostly the business is performed by flatbed units within the large TL carriers such as Schneider, Hunt, and CRST.
