Definition: Fishing and Fishing Tools

Fishing is the process by which the oil company and drilling contractor recover an item lost or dropped into a well bore. Fishing tools are the devices used to “catch” the lost item. During the drilling and well completing process, items are dropped in well or something breaks leaving an obstruction in the well. A fisherman is usually called and he brings a truck load of tools that he may need to use to recover the lost item. The term came from old days as we are “fishing” for a “fish,” meaning we are trying to catch something we cannot see or touch. This service is provided by many companies including Weatherford International, Wilson Downhole Services, and many others.
