Definition: Moissanite

Moissanite is a laboratory-produced gem material marketed exclusively by Charles & Colvard Ltd. since 1995. While this material, also known as silicon carbide, does occur in nature, it does so only in minute amounts that are impractical for jewelry use. The original natural material was discovered by and named for Dr. Ferdinand Frederick Henri Moissan in 1893. Dr. Moissan had been examining geological materials from a meteorite that had been discovered in Arizona. With a higher refractive index than diamond, Charles & Colvard claim that this material is a reasonable alternative to diamond for jewelry purchasers. Moissanite is sold by Charles & Colvard as loose gem material to retailers and jewelry manufacturers. These manufacturers then sell finished jewelry containing Moissanite to a variety of retailers including specialty stores, television shopping networks, and department stores. Charles & Colvard Ltd. is a publicly traded company under the symbol CTHR.
