Definition: Commodity Components

These are characterized by needing little engineering and manufacturing know-how to produce and meet customers’ specs. Typically they are made on equipment that is commonly available, relatively cheap, and by workers who can perform simple tasks and are not highly skilled. The major implication for these types of parts is that price is the only differentiator and the customer can move production from one supplier to another quickly, in trying to shop for the best price.
