At the end of the day, family controlled companies are driven by the same needs as any other business; value growth. The difference is that the family governed businesses are often more focussed on sustainable value growth, rather than one time blips in market valuation or a balance sheet.

Founding families will IPO or sell to a strategic buyer in order to grow the business beyond what they could on their own. The family will often retain control through equity interest. The interest is usually diluted with each generation unless a patriarch or matriarch is able to keep the family together. Performance depends on how much equity the family holds, whether or not the family members are competent, the competence of the management team, and the family's relationship with them.

Chrysler dismantles electric car plans under Fiat | www.reuters.com
Following the presentation of Mr Marchionne of the new strategy for Chrysler last week, it may be surprising that Fiat-Chrysler will limit the investments in electric vehicles in the next years. I think that this decision is part of a well thought strategy which aims to create a strong automotive group, based on financial solidity, global presence, and ownership of innovative technologies.

RadioShack Up; iPhone Seen Helping '10 EPS, Wireless Efforts | online.wsj.com
Since taking over Radio Shack in 2006 Julian Day has taken a very methodical, first things first approach to getting the house in order, beginning with controllable costs: cutting SG&A, closing underperforming stores, consolidating multiple service and distribution centers, improving inventory management and de-cluttering stores all the while being very mindful of cash. The world is intellectually lazy, so it is always looking for 'quick-fixes'and one line answers. Management is one area where such placebos are often handed out by our global gurus! If you think about it,however, it is individual thinking, individual perceptions, and individual relationships with the world around them that brings success to such managers. Without such a unique combination of attributes, coupled with a particular situation at a particular point of time, spectacular success would not happen. The success I acknowledge, however, is the success of gurus who piggy-back on such stories to win personal success and acclaim!
