Family Pride Runs Deep.

November 11, 2009

The Cognac Queen | www.telegraph.co.uk

At the end of the day, family controlled companies are driven by the same needs as any other business; value growth. The difference is that the family governed businesses are often more focussed on sustainable value growth, rather than one time blips in market valuation or a balance sheet.

Holding On to the Reigns

Founding families will IPO or sell to a strategic buyer in order to grow the business beyond what they could on their own.  The family will often retain control through equity interest. The interest is usually diluted with each generation unless a patriarch or matriarch is able to keep the family together.  Performance depends on how much equity the family holds,  whether or not the family members are competent, the competence of the management team, and the family's relationship with them.

As most fish resources are already fully- or even over-utilised, aquaculture will have to grow to meet the increased demand. As pelagic fish increasingly is used for human consumption and fish oil is increasingly used by food and medicine industries alternative feed has to be developed. With development of sustainable management and production practices the future of aquaculture is promising.

Fiat-Chrysler new strategy: no priority for electric vehicles

Chrysler dismantles electric car plans under Fiat | www.reuters.com

Following the presentation of Mr Marchionne of the new strategy for Chrysler last week, it may be surprising that Fiat-Chrysler will limit the investments in electric vehicles in the next years. I think that this decision is part of a well thought strategy which aims to create a strong automotive group, based on financial solidity, global presence, and ownership of innovative technologies.

Since taking over Radio Shack in 2006 Julian Day has taken a very methodical, first things first approach to getting the house in order, beginning with controllable costs: cutting SG&A, closing underperforming stores, consolidating multiple service and distribution centers, improving inventory management and de-cluttering stores all the while being very mindful of cash. But, the big question was always  in a digital world, was Radio Shack relevant?

The world is intellectually lazy, so it is always looking for 'quick-fixes'and one line answers. Management is one area where such placebos are often handed out by our global gurus! If you think about it,however, it is individual thinking, individual perceptions, and individual relationships with the world around them that brings success to such managers. Without such a unique combination of attributes, coupled with a particular situation at a particular point of time, spectacular success would not happen. The success I acknowledge, however, is the success of gurus who piggy-back on such stories to win personal success and acclaim!

Magna Will Find Better Targets for Their Attention and Their Cash

November 6, 2009

Magna Ends Hunt for Automaker, Eyes Suppliers | www.autonews.com

Magna may have risked alienating certain customers, especially in regards to component technology development, if they had succeeded with the Opel partial purchase.Magna is developing good partnerships in the growth segments of electronic, software, sensor, battery, and power management, so a growing interest in shopping for those suppliers that can be added to Magna's electronics or eletrical component product portfolio makes very good sense.

The urbanization of China continues and is expected to increase its cities’ population by another 350 million people, creating demand for as many as five million new buildings. Every square meter of new construction will require floor covering. Ultimately China may be the world's largest floor covering market; Mohawk Industries, Shaw, Armstrong World Industries and Tarkett should take heed.
