William Gewirtz, Ph.D., is the Lead Partner of Communications and Networking at the Market Strategy Group, a management consultancy. He is also the Principal of WLG Consulting, a company providing consulting services to operating and investment entities in the enterprise networking and the telecom sector.
Previously, Dr. Gewirtz was the Global Head of Enterprise Technical Support, Founding Managing Partner, Managed Network Solutions unit, and transition executive, IBM global network at AT&T; and the Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of AT&T Business Services, where he was responsible for analyzing the growth and profitability for business services. He has also held management positions at Bell Laboratories, and was responsible for working on distributed systems, and transaction and database processing.

Wifi has effectively created a user base with its large embedded base of intel PC's with Wifi built in. The challenge to wireless data is consequential, voice has many other issues to overcome.

Wifi serves a market - but backhaul is not free. Both cost, broad accessibility and simplicity still favor the mobile operators. To date, new technologies that create new markets succeed. Wifi will create new opportunities, if it is to have broad based success.
