Steve Rubinstein, OD, is a Clinical Optometrist at Diamond District Eye Associates and Sound Shore Vision Care, office based practices in New York. Dr. Rubinstein has a biochemical background. He has won the Frank R. Blood award by the Society of Toxicology for the best paper in this peer reviewed publication. Dr. Rubinstein is also an advisor with Cancer Care, Inc. and presents to groups of patients as a cancer survivor. He has interest in ocular evaluation of glaucoma using coherent lasers. A few months ago, a small company tried to import Lumigan (bimatoprost), licensed by Allergan, in an eyelash applicator. It was held by the FDA as an unapproved use of a prescription medication. Now the owner of the patent is trying to import the same drug legally.

Alcon becomes part of a larger group that is very interested in profiting from eye care. The patient will probably not see any changes in labeling or distribution for a few years. The companies interlock well, but do not have a lot of overlap.....except for sales reps!
