Samuel Russ, PhD, is an assistant professor at University of South Alabama, an academic institution. Previously, he was a Manager - Advanced Technology R&D at Scientific-Atlanta (Cisco) where he managed a hardware design group for cable DVR and non-DVR set-top boxes. He designed 4 set-tops including the industry-leading Explorer 8300, taking all four designs from paper to mass production. He also filed about 40 patent applications of which 2 have issued. He is experienced in hard disk drive (HDD) reliability and performance, development of point-of-sale retail terminals and machine-vision systems. (This is me - Update Profile)

TiVO has unveiled a CableCARD-compatible set-top with a huge storage capacity (1 Terabyte).  This is an obvious effort to break into the cable market via retail, but the approach has some profound limitations.  TiVO is also trying other ways to break into Cable.
