GLG NewsSM Analyses by Samuel Russ(?)
TiVO has unveiled a CableCARD-compatible set-top with a huge storage capacity (1 Terabyte). This is an obvious effort to break into the cable market via retail, but the approach has some profound limitations. TiVO is also trying other ways to break into Cable.
Solid-state disk drive (SSD) makers are trying to break into small-capacity markets such as small laptops and enterprise servers. There are too many manufacturers and they face significant issues to complete with magnetic hard disk drives (HDDs).
Besides consolidating the flash-memory industry, the merger will also help Samsung's foray into solid-state disk storage.
Solid state disks are catching up to hard disk drives in terms of performance, capacity, and cost. In what ways are they ahead and behind, and will they catch up? If and when they do catch up, the storage industry will undergo major changes.
