H.R. 3221 is Muddled Legislation That Fails to Address the Key Issue
September 7, 2007
Energy and Environmental Policy | www.districtenergy.org
H.R. 3221 recognizes and supports the need to reduce energy consumption and align energy consumption with environmental needs, but at the same time it fails to address the root cause of America's energy challenge -- which is to increase energy supplies to accommodate economic growth in coming decades. >>Full disclosure: Portions of this analysis were distilled from energy industry “talking points” in response to H.R. 3221; however, my independent opinions are separately identified. Regardless of the source of information, this legislation could have a negative impact on the U.S. economy and our efforts to achieve energy independence.<<
Middle East to Dominate Polypropylene Trade – Putting it in Perspective
September 7, 2007
Mideast to Dominate Trade | www.chemweek.com
>>Propylene demand has historically exceeded ethylene demand and the forecast is for this to continue with a differential of about 0.5%/year. >>Availability of propylene supply has been a concern for years as steam cracking growth results in more ethylene production than propylene and historical propylene alternatives have become fully developed. >>Growth in Middle East ethane based ethylene capacity will exacerbate this problem in the next few years, especially if a worldwide recession occurs. >>The Middle East will eventually dominate polypropylene trade, but the transition will most likely be less traumatic than that for polyethylene.

Sale of GE Plastics – Will it Affect US Auto OEM Costs?
May 18, 2007
G.E. Nears a Deal to Sell Plastics Unit | www.nytimes.com
• Sabic (if successful in this acquisition) will operate GE Plastics more like the commodity company it is becoming and less like the speciality plastics company it has been. • Sabic’s strategy has been to grow outside of the Middle East through acquisitions and to more closely integrate their chemicals business with refining operations. • However, in previous acquisitions, Sabic has been careful to avoid disruption of the local markets into which they are moving. Although Sabic might be able to cut prices under pressure from the automobile companies, they will more likely be content with maintaining their market share.
Green Plastic? – Well, maybe but “don’t quit the day job just yet”

Organic-plastic company gets $15 million | news.com.com
1. In most cases there is no difference between plastic from agricultural sources and from petroleum. 2. The key to successful manufacture of any product is cost which includes both raw material and processing costs. There is a wide variance in these costs while the price of the end product, plastic pellets, is the same with exception of whatever premium the consumer is willing to pay for green. 3. Determining the most efficient and cheapest route to any product requires evaluation of all of the alternative processes.
