Mariano Bengoechea is the former Development Director for Citigroup and Head of the Financial Markets Development Unit; he left in 2006. In this capacity, he was involved in the modernisation and reform of financial systems, capital markets, and in the development of market infrastructures in over 50 developed and emerging markets worldwide. In addition, Mr. Bengoechea was a member of the bank’s Payment Systems Risk Committee. He also worked in the Global Securities Services Group, the Global Transactions Services Division, and in the Financial Institutions Group for Europe. He joined the bank in 1990, after 10 years as Chief Executive of the Madrid Stock Exchange. Mr. Bengeochea was also involved in assisting South Africa establish STRATE, the electronic settlement system for shares on the JSE Securities Exchange.
