John Ryan

Council Member Biography

John W. Ryan is a Partner at Crowell & Moring in Washington, DC, where he focuses on the chemical, biotechnology, medical device, and pharmaceutical industries. As the former Vice President and Chief Patent Counsel for IGEN International, he has managed various patent portfolios. Previously, Mr. Ryan also served as a Partner and Co-Chair of the IP Group at Dechert and Partner and Head of the Patent Practice at Wilmer Cutler & Pickering. With over 20 years of legal experience, he has practiced in both the transactional and litigation side of intellectual property, including counseling and opinion work, e.g., infringement, validity, and freedom-to-operate opinions, licensing, litigation, portfolio management and valuation, and patent preparation and prosecution. Mr. Ryan has extensive experience in drafting various agreements such as research and development, licensing, clinical trial, co-promotion, joint venture, and collaboration. He also taught intellectual property licensing as an adjunct professor at Albany Law School. Mr. Ryan is admitted to the New York, Pennsylvania, and District of Columbia Bars and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is also a member of the bar of the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit as well as various federal courts.
