Council Member Biography

Hossein Ardehali, MD, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Medicine at Feinberg Cardiovascular Institute in Illinois. His specialties include lipid metabolism, preventive cardiology, electrophysiology and heart failure. Dr. Ardehali's basic science research interest is in the areas of reperfusion injury and cardio protection against ischemic injury. He is also involved in several projects involving prevention of coronary artery disease, role of inflammation in atherosclerosis, antiplatelets (like aspirin and Plavix) in heart disease, and statins in inflammation and coronary disease. Dr. Ardehali has used a wide variety of different techniques including confocal microscope, flow cytometry, gene cloning, tissue culture, and protein biochemistry to study the role of mitochondria in cellular protection against ischemia. He is also the Editor of "Cardiology Views and News in the New Millennium". Dr. Ardehali has served as an Instructor at Johns Hopkins University. (This is me - Update Profile)

New studies suggest DES may improve outcome in the setting of AMI

The studies reported in the recent issues of NEJM are significant in that they provide evidence that DES in the setting of AMI with ST elevation may improve outcome. Taxel-eluting stents showed nonsignificant improvement in adverse cardiac events, but sirolimus-eluting stents showed a significant reduction in target vessel revascularization
