Dennis Profitt is an independent consultant in the automotive industry. Previously, he was President of C&A Plastics Division and led a 33 plant division. Earlier, he was Director of Manufacturing for Ford Motor, where he was responsible for the Rouge Site and Supplier Strategy for Vehicle Operations. Mr. Profitt led the renovation of the Rouge Center, a $2B reconstruction. He has experience in leadership and technical positions in Assembly and Powertrain. He has expertise in vehicle assembly, powertrain manufacturing, welding, machining, material logistics, quality, negotiations, union/management relations, lean mfg, and flexible manufacturing. He worked with Major Tier 1 suppliers for Ford Motor to improve their operations. He has been a keynote speaker at Universities and symposiums on two continents, a National negotiator, benchmarked automotive OEM and Tier 1's on three continents. He brings a wealth of knowledge on automotive manufacturing to any conversation. (This is me - Update Profile)

Ford Details Overhaul Plans As Losses Continue To Grow | online.wsj.com
Ford announced it was bringing six European vehicles to the US market and GM announced it was closing four truck Plants and adding shifts and new products to other plants. While driven by the marketplace and predominantly by the price of fuel, this represents a departure from past downturns.

With US auto sales down 13% in July and the forecast for the balance of the year equally distressing, news for the Tier 1 suppliers is even worse. The news of existing designed European vehicles being brought to the US quickly , may well mean European companies presently manufacturing parts in Europe may come with them. That means 2009 and 2010 offer no solution but only more problems.

In the short time Robert Nardelli has been at Chrysler, he has sent very powerful signals to the dealership body, the employees, and now to the supply base as well. He may not be an auto guy but he moves quickly and listens. The hiring of Jim Press from Toyota was a shot heard round the world for the dealership body and employees. Now,Chrysler's Purchasing which has treated its suppliers like the enemy for years is getting shook up.
