Oil Price Scapegoats

June 19, 2008

Why Big Oil is not to blame for fuel prices | www.thefirstpost.co.uk

When Government fails our representatives are quick to lay blame at the door of others. No different in this new energy crisis. The USA Senate and Congress, whether Republican or Democrat, has taken no postive steps over the last twenty years to wean the USA economy off foreign oil dependence. Like any addict there is first the necessity to recognise and accept the problem, and then take the neccesary steps to cure the patient. Big oil has just done what any successful business is supposed to do in our political climate. Lobby to the utmost and make a much profit as possible for its shareholders and executives. Big oil, like any other company, is not a philanthropic organization. It beholds the USA Government to take bold steps to change the energy policies of this country and to rely less on foreign oil supplies. To encourage Big oil to diversify into other fuels.

How to sweeten the pill.

Ethanol Giants Struggle To Crack Brazil Market | online.wsj.com

There is no doubt of the immense activity and interest for the major energy companies, not already in Brazil through their co-operations with Petrobras and as distributors of gasoline and alcohol for cars, to invest into the sugar cane industry in Brazil. The Brazilians smile and wonder why they are not allowed to sell their ethanol here in the USA due to high tariffs applied by the USA congress. Maybe another example of free trade if its favorable to the USA lobby and farmers. The Brazilians have developed and grown the bio deisel industry through sugar cane ethanol to such a state of the art, that when there last week, I drove a hybrid Fiat Palio that went round Sao Paulo on gasoline and/or alcohol depending on my choice. The USA have a habit of asking other countries to give up their heritage and natural resources in the name of free trade or to enhance world progress, while at the same time barring these same countries from equal access to the USA markets for these products. Potential Energy Crunch May Bring Other Fuels to Fore | online.wsj.com

Having lived in Brazil from 1974 to 1995, and visiting there at least three times a year, I am struck by lack of public knowledge in the US, that Brazil has had alternative fuel for over 30 years in the form of ethanol. My last car in Brazil, a 2 liter Ford station wagon, was powered on 100% alcohol, while my wife's car was a dual purpose vehicle where you could drive it either on 100% traditional gasoline or ethanol. What has become natural to the Brazilian seems far fetched for the US citizen because of misinformation, Government interest in the oil companies and a lack of courage by either of the political parties to come to face with the oil crisis over the past twenty years.

Protectionism Does Not Protect

USG to Cut 500 Jobs Due to Housing Slump | biz.yahoo.com

Any discussion on the restriction of Free Trade is important in this Global economy. The more the USA imposes tariffs restrictions the more the rest of the world will simply retaliate. Through sensible and considered negotiations. most trade problems can be resolved to the benefit of both counties. There is no doubt the USA, and any toher country has the right to combat illegal trade practises that result in more cost effective goods from overseas, but to not openly discuss inherent Union problems, antiquated machinery and lack of innovation in the USA and simply apply tariffs, is not going tosolve any trade problems

Brazil's Ethanol A Viable and Obvious Alternative

Bush, Brazil discuss ethanol importation | southflorida.bizjournals.com

Brazil has dominated the production and use of this fuel for more than 25 years.

Brazil has unlimited land resources to plant more sugarcane.
Due to this, it can reduce the dependence on Venezuelan oil and shift the balance of power.
