The impacts will vary depending on the industry
April 27, 2006
Is Moore's Law Irrelevant? | www.reed-electronics.com
*Reducing costs via cramming more transistors per sq.cm of silicon is nearing an economic wall
*Potential implactions are that:
1) Packing of semi's will become more important, and more of an investment focus going forward for the EDA industry
2) The semi equipment manuf will need to find other growth areas beyond building the latest stepper for smaller geometries
3) Semiconductor design will shift from how much can I cram onto one device to more efficient and novel approaches to solving particular application problems.
SNPS/MAGMA lawsuit opening arguments
April 25, 2006
Role of IBM engineer pivotal to Synopsys-Magma case | www.eetimes.com
*Both sides have changed their stories somewhat since the original suits were filed, which definitely doesn't help their credibility
*This is a complex case, whose events occurred 10 years ago with no "smoking gun"
*An IBM engineer's testimony will play a critical role in helping to determine whether the work that is the subject of the lawsuit was developed as part of joint development effort between SNPS and IBM, and would therefore be covered under an existing Magma/IBM patent licensing agreement
SNPS/MAGMA lawsuit goes to trial
April 24, 2006
Synopsys, Magma court battle set to tip-off Monday | www.eetimes.com
*SNPS/MAGMA case to start today and will most likely end before calendar Q2.
*Only the first step in a potentially protracted legal battle
*SNPS has deeper pockets than MAGMA, although this is an emotionally charged lawsuit
*Most are settled out of court, but this one could go on.
SNPS design wins in back end and DFM
April 21, 2006
SNPS Inks deals with Agere and Sony | www.reed-electronics.com
*SNPS and CDN continue to battle in the back end
*While SNPS gets the win for digital designs, CDN also gets the analog/mixed signal business, continuing their market share leadership in this segment
*SNPS also gains another win for the RET (resolution enhancement technology), beating out MENT at Sony
Lithography tools from EDA vendors address key issues for new process technologies
April 19, 2006
Soothing balm for bleeding edge litho | www.eetimes.com
*New process technologies (eg., 65nm and below, immersion lithography) require new EDA software tools and capabilities
*MENT, SNPS, and newcomer to this segment CDN stand to gain as they roll out new products
*LAVA (Magma) also looking to enter this space via their new toolsuite (Talus), although these tools are used further upstream
