Alex Bekker, MD, PhD, is Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Neurosurgery at New York University Medical Center. He is also Vice-Chair for Strategic Development and Director of Clinical Research in the Anesthesiology Department at NYU. Dr. Bekker is an author of 45 peer-reviewed articles, five patents, and 80 abstracts related to anesthesia, pain control, circulation, clinical pharmacology, and biomedical engineering. He frequently presents and moderates scientific panels at major meetings of anesthesiologists. Dr. Bekker has received numerous research grants from American Heart Association, Abbott Laboratories, Sanofi Pharmaceuticals, Hospira, Aspect Medical, Glaxo Wellcome (GlaxoSmithKline), and Merck. He has also consulted for companies such as Abbott Laboratores, Merck & Company, Pharmacia, Hospira, and Physiometrix. (This is me - Update Profile)

Investors Have Overreacted: The Use of BIS Devices to Monitor the Depth of Anesthesia Will Not Be Affected by One Negative Article

The recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine has suggested that the BIS monitoring system does not reduce the incidence of awareness under anesthesia. The stock of Aspect Medical Systems, the manufacturer of the BIS monitoring system, has lost 40% of its value during the last few weeks. The numerous problems with this particular trial design and its execution, however, preclude the educated reader from drawing any far-reaching conclusions. I do not believe that this article would seriously affect the use of BIS devices.
