Alan Fleischer, MD, is a Professor and Chair of Dermatology at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. In addition to his general and surgical dermatology practice, he has been the primary investigator on dozens of Phase II through Phase IV clinical trials. Dr. Fleischer has published extensively on the delivery of dermatologic healthcare in the U.S. The primary disease states he has investigated include the inflammatory diseases, especially psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, urticaria, acne and rosacea. Large, well-conducted meta-analysis shows as a preventative strategy, probiotics may have a modest effect on decreasing the incidence of atopic eczema. However, in terms of treating active disease or preventing recurrence of disease, no convincing evidence supports the use of the probiotics examined thus far.
