China’s Geely, Beijing Automotive Target Volvo, Saab | www.bloomberg.com
It is a known fact that the Chinese government has put its weight and tremendous wealth behind targeted industries, Electronics , automotive and aerospace and it is well on its way to target the general industrial market. It is succeeding and have taken over Japan in Electronics manufacturing out put...why ? they have the people, the natural resources, the cash and the market..and we in the West are willing to surrender all ,including established brands as Volvo ,Saab and Hummer.

Italian Government Reaches Union Agreement on Fiat’s CNH Plant | www.bloomberg.com
Italian Labor law is so inflexible about layoffs and forget the future of the plant in Imola if it invovles permanent closure. Italy, behind Spain , is one of the most socialistic countries when it come to labor law giving no flexibility whatsoever to industry in manoeuvering during difficult times, that is while Fiat CEO is scanning the globe and is in bed with Chrysler , not only for high cost production , but also for labor inflexibility.

Defense industry pleads for investment | www.ft.com
To my best of my knowledge the UK defense spending in 2010 is projected to be up by a few percentage points and so as the EU and Nato..so what is the fuss all about..outsourcing? then they have to cry endlessly as this has been the trend for a long time in the world of the defense industry, but perhaps a novelty in Britain.

Konecranes Starts Statutory Negotiations in Headquarter Functions in Hyvinkää | www.konecranes.com
KoneCranes has experienced a 40-50% decline in orders year over year and a restructuring plans in not only warranted but a must. The demand for cranes both in the industrial as well as construction and on/off-shore has declined so rapidly that unless drastic actions are taken companies as Kone and others including Demag and Terex are at risk for survival.
No Moral Comparison / EU handouts to Airbus and Boeing business with Uncle Sam

WTO to rule next week on Airbus funding dispute | www.google.com
To state that a hand to Airbus from Germany , France and Britain is the moral equivalent to legitimate services rendered by Boeing to the US government is none sense . The Europeans must learn how to do business and compete in the real world and subsidies is immoral and anti-competitive. The European and EU Government complain about China and other Asian dumping laws yet they practice the same.

Auto makers and the dinasourses

Chrysler Plan Trims Fiat's Stake, Cuts Out Cerberus | online.wsj.com
The US car makers ,especially GM and Chrysler, have caused self inflicting injuries on their operations and other orgnizations that work with them and for them. , I have written in the fall of 2008 about the ultimate need for GM and Chrysler to file for chapter 11 and reorganize under the supervision of the court and have then explained the merits of filing and how fitting these companies' circumstances to such filing. My article was not that popluar at the time ,because I think the auto industry insiders are and still in denial with the arrogance that how could it be possible that GM is in Bankruptcy ? well it is possible and if this was done early on, we the tax payers would not have to throw good money after bad money , and also the bleeding would perhaps have stopped ..sort off.Chapter 11 to flush out the old GM and Chrysler and emerge as a new, strong, leaner and perhaps smaller companies is the answer, of course with a different management team that know the real world.
Bailout the automakers ..no way

‘Peak-oil’ doomsayers catch Wall St.’s attention | www.iht.com
The problem with Detroit is arrogance and know it all..for years now the leadership at Detroit three auto makers insisted on not briniging new and fresh blood from the outside..you do not the autombile industry , you are no good. Yet there are tremendous talents out there that can can help bring about new ideas and approaches for automaking.Except for A. Mullaly and by accident Nardelli..look at who is running Detroit...they keep producing ineffecient cars ,not to the liking of the current generation of Americans and for that matter the global markets, and un-negotiated labor contracts that are unbelievably expensive and putting the US automakers at a $2000 disavantage per car than the competition, yet they come to DC and say they employ 3.0 people, they pay health care to current employees and retirees...and I ..I.. I.. and you owe. No the tax payer does not owe you and you should run your business as most companies do and let the free market forces decide...Detroit needs a revamp
Not so fast either...outsourcing continues

Is Outsourcing to China Over? | www.inc.com
The writer of the article is seemingly unware of the trends that are taking place in outsourcing to low cost producing countries, including China and India and has not been following the apparent trends that are shifting the landscape not only for large manufacturing companies but even the mid sized and the smaller , these do not only include metal bending but also engineering brains beyond IT.

Despite conflict, U.S. does business with Iran | www.msnbc.msn.com
Sanctioning Iran or Zimbabwe or any such nations is a bad approach to politics as well as economics. It is true as the writer says that the US efforts on sanctions are not coordinated, worse , these measures are never properly enforced and loopholes benefit a select few. More importantly, ecnomic sanctions, boycotts and all the jazzy language end up always hurting the US producers and benefit other nations of Asia, South America and especially Europe. Our leadership has got to stop relying on and using sanctions , which in essence ,are sanctioning US companies and not the intended target.

Global steel prices - brace for a correction? | www.reuters.com
The article rightfully points out to the increase in demand for steel products and metals in general and that countries as India, China and the Middle are one big construction site with high demand for raw metals thus increasing prices of the benchmark products such as hot-rolled carbon steel to a record high. However, the article failed to mention the huge out-put of steel and metals that some of those countries produce, such as China which currently is the number one producing country in th world with 500M MT annually, in additions to the new comers such as Brazil with high quality products but less expensive production cost . What the article also misses is the huge cash reserves that these countries have accumulated and the tremendous economic growth that they are experiencing in certain sectors of some 30% annually with a combined GDP projection of 7-8 %.

Heathrow’s older terminals still a disgrace, travellers say | travel.timesonline.co.uk
London Heathrow is a problematic airport, outed over congested and overely expanded facility. But beyond all this it is mismanaged and customer care does not exist in the employees mind. Most business travelers are avoiding Heathrow and traveling out of London City airport , a smaller more effecient airport. I had a personal experience just three weeks ago where I had a two hours meeting in London flying out of Berlin, I was delayed two hours in the inbound and three hours on the outbound..With no information available and the treatment of passengers is beyond any description. I predict that Heathrow will soon see a down turn and the situation will effect the British economy in General.

I am a CEO in the automation business and previously in the Aerospace segment. I have followed Rockwell since it was based in Pittsburgh and know all the transformation that it has gone through ..I believe that since the acquisition off Allen Bradley and the divestiture of the Defense business to Boeing, the company has lost its identity and continue to search for the right spot but have not found it.Rockwell is a good name and the name was identifiable with certain Brands and market..no longer , it may as well rename itself Allen Bradley as this is what its business now in Automation and the Name Allan Bradley is more appropriate to this business than Rockwell Automation or Rockwell International..etc. The company is certainly a take over candidate for the obvious reasons in it market place
Turnaround management in industrial and automotive

CAN NARDELLI HELP CHRYSLER | wallstreetjournal.com
I think it is unfair to Label a CEO as "Six Sigma" management style, as a CEO has many management tools in his tool box, one of which is Six Sigma. A CEO is a leader with a vision for strategic initiatives and can assembele a team that buys-in and deliver results. I do not know Mr. Nardelli, However, I am certain tht he posses such qualities. What I am not sure of if Mr. Nardelli is a Turnaround/Change agent CEO. I say that because of his mix performance at Home Depot and his GE background that made apply these approaches to a retail company. GE Executives have not run a stand alone companies, tend to be cheer leaders with slogans and long term plans. One size does not fit all so to speak. What applies in one instant and environment, may not apply else,. So unless Mr. Nardelli takes off his GE hat and get to work in a practical and pragmatic way, then I am afraid that the writer of the article is correct and the turnaround will fail.
